Mapping 2008 - 9

Children’s Services Mapping Exercise 2008

The Children’s Services Mapping (CSM) exercise to be launched in October 08 will this year be extended to include local authority children’s services and those services commissioned, managed or led by Children’s Trusts.

The mapping exercise is jointly sponsored by the Department of Health and the Department of Children, Schools and Families.

CSM aims to provide a description of all children’s services giving baseline data for 2008 against which future change can be measured.  The exercise will continue to monitor the progress of implementation of the National Services Framework for Children, Young People and Maternity Services (2004) and the forthcoming Children’s Health Strategy.

PCTs and NHS Provider Trusts will take part as in previous years by nominating a senior member of staff to be the mapping lead to take responsibility for co-ordinating activity to complete the exercise, who then registers their individual organisation.  PCTs will also be asked to contribute to a children’s trust wide questionnaire

Local authorities intending to participate are asked to identify someone within their senior management group to act as their mapping lead, discuss this with their Children’s Trust/Partnership and notify the Durham helpdesk of their intention to take part.

A new website is now live at www.childrensmapping.org.uk where further information on how to take part, briefing materials and support to participants is available.

The mapping lead will be able to register from 1st October 08 and data collection will commence in November 08 for 4 months until 27th February 09.

This collection will provide the following products online:

  • Open access live tables of all information collected
  • Tools for comparing data
  • Local Authority/PCT/Children’s Trust “Myspace” areas
  • National and regional reports of key information
  • Detailed reports of policy-relevant topics
  • Local public service directories.
