One of the key areas for delivery in the Mental Health Improvement Partnership (MHIP) Programme both locally and nationally was to improve the service user and carer experiences of mental health services. In order to achieve this it was important that service users and carers were effectively engaged in the whole process.Nationally, Laurie Bryant (Service User Lead, NIMHE Service Improvement Team) and Lu Duhig (Carer Lead, NIMHE Service Improvement Team) provided expert support and advice both as members of the National Steering/Reference Group and individually to the pilot sites. The National Steering/Reference Group also consisted of members from a variety of organisations such as Rethink and Turning Point.
Within the pilot sites service users and carer representatives were members of the Partnership Steering Group. Service users and carers were also integral to the projects carried out within the programmes.
At the start of the programme measures for improvements in service users and carers experience were suggested in the Service Improvement Framework. Other measures were developed within the pilot sites and can be seen within their implementation plans and end of programme review documents (see module 4 for these documents) . Further information on this can also be seen in the Theme 3 Outcome Measures
