Setting up local steering groups
- Maintain a strategic overview of the programme
- Facilitates engagement
- Supports the programme manager
- Creates a joined-up focus
- Can be helpful in breaking down barriers to cross-organisational working
- Can create an external frame of reference
What MHIP did
Each pilot site was led by a local Steering Group which was co-ordinated by a lead local stakeholder agency usually either the SHA or PCT. The Steering Group’s role was to oversee the delivery of the programme. It included representatives from all the programme partners and provided the formal interface with the NIMHE Client Manager.
Some pilot sites chose to extend the role of existing Partnerships, such as the Local Implementation Team (LIT), others chose to set up a new Steering Group in it’s own right.

One pilot site extended the role of their Steering Group, following MHIP in to a Cross Organisational Service Improvement Steering Group.
